Like any superhero, comics has a thrilling origin story. This workshop is a one-day course designed to explore how “comics” came to be. We’ll travel through history and around the world to see if we can make sense of what makes comics comics. We’ll pay special attention to the editorial cartoons, newspaper strips, and comics books from before the 1980s that laid the foundation for the artists and texts you love.
Our 2017 instructor was Andréa Gilroy.

Miss Anthology’s mission is to support racially and economically diverse young comic artists who identify as female and/or LGBTQIA+ by teaching professional skills through hands-on workshops, and publishing their work online and in print. By introducing female and genderqueer artists and writers to the comics and the art industries before they graduate, they will gain a firm understanding and head start on their careers, as well as an established network of peers within this otherwise male-dominated field.
